Pozzovivo: It was impossible to beat Lutsenko on Green Mountain

Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) had looked so good on the early stages of the Tour of Oman that there was almost an air of resignation among his rivals ahead of the decisive summit finish on Green Mountain. Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain-Merida) was one of the few clinging onto a sense of optimism, but the last vestige evaporated as he watched the Kazakh champion surge away from him in the last 150 metres. Pozzovivo had started the day fifth overall, 27 seconds down on Lutsenko, and quickly emerged as th...

2021 Tour de France to start in Copenhagen

The 2021 Tour de France will start in Copenhagen, according to reports in the Danish and French press. It will be the first time that the Tour de France has visited Denmark and only the second time that one of the three Grand Tours has started in the country. It will also be the most northerly start for the Tour de France in its history. Copenhagen is no stranger to major road cycling events, having hosted the 2011 World Championships.  There was some confusion around the news after the initia...

Lutsenko dedicates Green Mountain win to his wife, who had miscarriage in December

After each of his three stage wins at the Tour of Oman, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) has climbed onto the podium, raised his arms, looked up, and pointed to the sky. On the first two occasions, he declined to explain what lay behind the salute but after conquering Green Mountain on Wednesday he revealed that it was for his family and his wife, who suffered a miscarriage in December.  Lutsenko had clearly been emotional on the podiums earlier in the race but Astana’s press officer explained he wante...

Defending champion Wellens returns to Ruta del Sol

Lotto Soudals Tim Wellens returns to the Ruta del Sol on Wednesday as the defending champion, but having only recently recovered from illness, the Belgian has humbly said that taking the overall title is less of a goal, and that the Spanish stage race will allow him to get back into a racing rhythm ahead of the spring Classics. Wellens has already tasted victory this season, at the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana – part of the Challenge Mallorca series – in early February, but was hit soon afterward...

Bardet brought the curtain down on his 2018 season when he was a non-finisher at Il Lombardia in mid-October, and so is now champing at the bit to get racing again after four months away from competition. Im happy to get back to racing. Since turning professional in 2012, Ive never started a season so late, Bardet said on his teams we...

Irizar to end pro career after Clasica San Sebastian

Trek-Segafredos Markel Irizar has announced he will end his 16-year stint in the professional peloton at the Clásica San Sebastián this year. The 39-year-old has raced with the Trek-Segafredo outfit and the RadioShack team that preceded it since 2010, and before that spent six seasons with Euskaltel-Euskadi. A loyal domestique, Irizars wins were few in number, with a time trial victory at the 2010 Tour du Poitou Charentes and the overall win in the 2011 Ruta del Sol his only individual results...
